Book of the Month:
COM+ Programming

COM+ Programming:
With it being so fashionable to write about the beta .NET framework - books that will be out of date soon after they are published - it is nice to see a book about an established product, and one that has a lengthy future. I am talking about COM+ of course, the .NET framework relies on COM+ for its component services and will do in the future. So it makes sense to learn about COM+ because you can use it now with Windows 2000 and you will use it in the future when .NET is released. More Details...

WELCOME & APOLOGY

First things first. Welcome to all the new subscribers, many of
whom joined when we were voted Resource of the Month on
CodeGuru. (Thanks to all at Codeguru for their continued
support.) iDevResource.com is a community resource and we look
forward to contributions from all our new community members.

On December 1st it will be a year since we launched - a year
which has seen competitions sponsored by Microsoft, a number of
renowned articles, huge growth in the discussion groups, and
plenty more for us to celebrate next month.

Apologies to all our loyal subscribers and contributors who
have seen a hiatus in activity in the site over the summer, but
it hasn't stopped the site's popularity or continued growth.
The site is run by a small team of developers who also have to
eat!

iDevResource.com is not sponsored nor funded except by
ourselves and to date it has cost a considerable amount of
money to get this far. But, we're back and we intend to
celebrate our first birthday on 1st December in style!
Funds are still somewhat low as none of us have time to sell
ads etc so all support - fiscal or contribution of new
content - will be gratefully appreciated - especially some
dosh to finally get the iGang t-shirts printed!

Advertising rates are extremely reasonable considering the
niche audience we now have - traffic figures continue to rise
with over 1000 unique visitors every day - and banners on the
site show a consistent clickthrough of 3.6%+. Rates etc can
be found at https://www.idevresource.com/advertising.asp.
Sponsorship deals are available, as well as newsletter
advertising, developer catalogue listings, plus you can buy
your books through our site - bookstore recently updated.

All articles will shortly be available in e-book format for a
piffling amount each to help us run a shared revenue program
with our valued contributors (and keep them fed too ;o)

We have some great ideas for the future (check out the
developments further down) and are just looking to find the
funds to finish them. Please support us - that is one big
community out there of IDR folk from some of the biggest names.
If you or your company would like to help iDR keep going
into the future, just let us know.

And now on to the meat and bones of the issue!

<> Articles

Our authors have been busy again, and of course Dr Richard
Grimes never stops! We thrive on contributions from our
subscribers and visitors and have a great edit and review team,
so get writing!

https://www.idevresource.com/com/library/articles/safearrays.asp

§§ 'Altering Resources'
Richard Grimes shows you how to access resources using the
Win32 API. Win32 also allows you to change the resources in
another file and Richard goes on to show you how to use
these APIs and explains some of the problems that you need
	to overcome.

There are plenty of other articles by Richard on the site -
just check out the COM, COM+, ATL and WTL sections!

<>Call for Authors

We are always looking for articles which are aimed at the
professional developer and which cover issues which are
	cutting-edge and/or undocumented elsewhere. There is a
shortage of COM+ and COM documentation and judging by the
mailing list there are still plenty of unanswered questions
out there. We have funds available to pay for MSMQ articles,
sponsored by Microsoft. There is a need for .NET articles,
ASP+, and C#, as well as more WTL articles. If you can
write any of the above, please contact us at
[email protected] or check out our Author Pack at
	https://www.idevresource.com/contribute.asp Every author
gets fame and glory through the Author Central area as well
as a pile of other benefits too numerous to be listed here ;o)

All articles which pass our stringent editorial team will be
produced as e-books very shortly and we will be operating a
shared revenue scheme with the authors. This, we hope, will
help to pay back the effort, support and expertise of our
contributors, and we hope that the community will purchase
the e-books knowing that the money is being well-spent and
	well-earned!

i D R D E V E L O P M E N T S

iDevJobs.com, our careers and employment site is now just
about completed, and should be up and running very shortly.
We are hoping that the second phase of development will
include conversion of certain areas of the site to .NET to
show just what iDevResource.com and our community are capable
of, as well as putting .NET technology to the test with a
	real-life scenario.

We are still trying to develop our news WIRE sites - we own
	windowswire.com, windows2000wire.com, compluswire and several
others. This would give many companies developing products,
offering training, upgrading software etc the chance to post
press releases, announcements etc on a site dedicated to that
end. However, we have run out of database developers who are
free to do the job. Anyone interested in the work, or is
there a company out there who would like to sponsor one or
more of these sites? Philanthropists also welcome!

The main iDevResource.com site will shortly undergo a change
to the main Zones to keep up with developments such as Visual
Studio etc. We would welcome feedback and comments on the
site and the direction which you think it should go in.

A S K T H E G U R U S

You probably wouldn't believe how many Ask the Gurus questions
we have received. There are still an awful lot of unanswered
questions as our gurus are too busy to do all of them so we're
looking for some help. Most of the questions which have not
been answered are in the Ask the Gurus forum so you can just
stop by there and see if you can help some of these people
find the answers they are looking for.

We hope to be shortly implementing a system whereby those
asking the questions pay for the response, as at this level
there is no reason for those with the expertise not to be paid.
Feedback on this idea would be appreciated.

C O M P E T I T I O N

To celebrate our first birthday we are running a competition.
All you have to do is write an article of 1000+ words for the
site. The winner will receive a set of Dr Richard Grimes'
books signed by the man himself (something to do with him
needing the space on his bookshelf!). Entries must be unique
content, not published elsewhere, and can be case studies,
how to.. or what is... type articles, and aimed at our niche
audience - that is, professional developers. No basic stuff
please, as the edit and review team are very fussy!!

	Send articles to
	mailto:[email protected]?subject=competition_dec during
November and we'll announce the winner during December.
